There's so much you could do to this. Make jump a random letter of the alphabet. Randomly chosen from the alphabet each time you press a key. Create a bunch of different commands that don't do anything, or don't do anything useful -- including a suicide command -- that are also bound to a random key each time you press something. Make the jump key cause the player to propel himself directly at the final boss to take massive damage to the point of being like another suicide key. Make the final boss immune to the first projectile you get so you have to accidentally stumble upon a complex upgrade system you don't even know exists without killing yourself to upgrade your bullets to the type the boss isn't immune to. Make special spikes that look exactly like the spikes that will kill you which are key spikes that you need to collide with to unlock the end of the level. Or you could make QWOP.

Wait, but the cinematic presentation IS (most of the time) the reason to buy it; it is the 'fantasy' part of making a game. Great video

Im an artist (and i like to think I'm a pretty good one, especially in regards to lines and color) and you did a phenomenal job! Literally anyone can do art. It doesnt have to be fancy or hyper realistic to be visually appealing and you absolutely nailed the look and feel of your game. Side note: most artists cant draw a straight line including myself. Thats why we use rulers and compasses to make circles. I use digital stabilizing tools and filters and gradients to make my art better. Technology exists for a reason and there's no shame and no loss of creativity in using it to bring your vision to life. If you find anyone saying they cant do art because they can't draw a straight line, please smack them for me ^-^

Don't you dare play on my nostalgia... I refuse to think your level is better than it actually is just because you put ***the*** music over the footage... other than that, the reasoning for the mechanics is stellar, make VVVVVV out of this now.

"Hangry Bear is kind of like Crazy Taxi, but the controls are not that snappy and responsive, and dealing with the movement physics is part of the main gameplay loop." So Hangry Bear is just like Hovercraft Race from the Monkey Ball series, but more fleshed out.

I saw the thumbnail, thought the game had great use of negative space. Also graphics itch my nostalgia perfectly. I'm an older guy. Started watching the video, immediately thought "wow, the character is so readable". The way it slides off of the walls, that particular animation keyframe is awesome. Also, the way its head swings around during long jumps. You feel it. Then, on top of all these awesome things, you had nice video editing. But THEN, I saw you made it with c3. I used c2 a lot, and some c3, then switched to Unity, and I still miss the way of construct so much. The simplicity and the limitations push your creativity and make the "coding" so much more enjoyable. In my free time, I keep thinking about the ways I could "implement" different architectural approaches with c3. Like, maybe it lends its hand perfectly to Entity Component System, if only I could "imagine" the perfect way to organize the Event Sheets... Kudos. Not really interested in platformers but this made my day. It even gave me motivation, which is rare these days.

Hi I have a question? If I were to make a game, how many places would you suggest putting. I am working on a visual novel,I know I can put it in itch for free. Is there anywhere else I can put the game free? That is possibly well known? I do want to put it possible on epic games steam and Android in the future but I think the total would be around $250 if I put them on all three. Do you have any advice on that?

Not that I'm some authority on game design, but my understanding is that a GDD is a flexible, living document. It may not be necessary in every case, but it can be changed to accept new ideas based on gameplay. I don't really see these things as two mutually exclusive design approaches.

Heya, just discovered your channel yesterday, watched the first 4 devlogs, then bought the game. I'm a hobby dev with only game jams to my name, but I pride myself on sound design and music composition since I was a professional musician a decade ago. One of the first things I noticed about reiterate() was how the sound design doesn't work. All of the sfx feel like they're straight out of sfxr with no processing. There's also not that much nuance in the sounds, such as having multiple samples for each type of sound effect that gets played randomly. The music also rather jarringly switches, and it's not that much work to write code to fade in and out of music in a satisfying way. I also feel like there are a lot of sections lacking sound that would benefit greatly from anything, such as the dialogue with your face (which I love that effect btw haha). Think any sound effects in the style of Daniel Mullins when text is rendered for a character to be "speaking" and it would make the game hit slightly harder, but would also make the dialogue seem more interesting. The game looks quite good, which makes the sound feel disconnected since it sounds quite poor. Lots of room for improvement with very minimal work at least, and I'm sure you'd get a lot of bang for your buck spending more time on optimizing the sound.

Super Meat Boy footage at 3:08 gets used a lot in this series, haha Anyway, as promised, watching the series backwards, and it's kind of interesting what was kept in the whole way through and what hit the cutting room floor. The demo of all the possible spike-related hazards seems to mostly contain stuff that made it to the final release, for example. If you'd started in Constuct 3 instead of Click Team Fusion 2.5, do you think stuff like water and lava would have made the cut, or did the final game want to be "purer" in terms of simple mechanics and monochromatic presentation?
